The holidays are coming, and your dining table is about to become the most photographed surface in your home. Here's how to set it like a designer — without spending a fortune or stressing yourself out.
Start With the Foundation: Your Table & Chairs
Everything else builds on this. A beautiful dining table and well-chosen chairs do most of the work before you add a single candle. If your table feels dated or your chairs don't match the moment, this is the season to invest.
The Layered Tablescape Formula
Great tablescapes work in layers, built from the bottom up:
- Tablecloth or runner — Linen in a warm neutral is endlessly versatile. Avoid polyester — it photographs poorly and feels cheap.
- Charger plates — These go under your dinner plates and add visual weight. Rattan, wood, or metallic finishes all work beautifully.
- Dinner plates — Keep them simple if your chargers are decorative, or go bold if your chargers are neutral.
- Glassware — Vary the heights. A water glass, wine glass, and champagne flute create visual rhythm.
- Flatware — Matte black or brushed gold flatware photographs beautifully and feels current.
The Centerpiece
The best centerpieces are low enough to see over and long enough to feel intentional. Try a runner of eucalyptus, pillar candles at varying heights, or a collection of small vessels with seasonal flowers. Avoid anything that blocks eye contact across the table.
Lighting Is Everything
Candles, candles, candles. Supplement with a dimmed overhead fixture and a sideboard lamp. The goal is warm, flattering light that makes everyone look beautiful and the food look irresistible.
The Finishing Touch: Place Cards
Even for casual gatherings, place cards make guests feel considered. Handwritten on simple card stock, they add a personal touch that no amount of expensive tableware can replicate.
