How to Care for Upholstered Furniture

Keep your upholstered furniture looking beautiful for decades with our complete care guide — fabric codes, spill treatment, and maintenance tips.

Premium upholstered furniture is an investment — and with the right care, it will look beautiful for decades. Here's everything you need to know.

Know Your Fabric Code

Check the tag on your furniture. Most pieces have a cleaning code:

  • W — Water-based cleaner safe
  • S — Solvent-based cleaner only (no water)
  • WS — Either water or solvent cleaner
  • X — Vacuum only, no liquid cleaners

Weekly Maintenance

Vacuum cushions and crevices weekly using an upholstery attachment. Rotate and flip cushions monthly to ensure even wear.

Dealing With Spills

Act immediately. Blot (never rub) with a clean white cloth. Work from the outside of the stain inward to prevent spreading. For water-safe fabrics, a small amount of dish soap diluted in water works for most spills.

Performance Fabrics

Many of our Four Hands and Dovetail pieces come in performance fabrics — these are engineered to resist stains, moisture, and fading. They're ideal for families, pet owners, or high-traffic areas. Look for fabrics rated for 50,000+ double rubs for durability.

Professional Cleaning

Have upholstered pieces professionally cleaned every 12–18 months. This removes deep-set dirt and refreshes the fabric. Always test any cleaner on a hidden area first.

Protecting Your Investment

  • Keep upholstered pieces out of direct sunlight to prevent fading
  • Use arm covers in high-contact areas
  • Treat leather pieces with a conditioner every 6–12 months
